Being part of an ad agency pitch team is always exciting. Sure, it involves lots of hard work and some late nights. But, that’s an easy trade-off when you factor in the places you get to travel and the new people you get to meet as part of the process.
Usually, there aren’t a lot of people around the office wondering if there’s any need for just one more on the team this time around. But, come on… Vegas! Even if it’s just for an overnight business trip, people can’t resist the urge to try to squeeze their way onto the team just this once.

My excuse was easy. “I’m Presentation Director. I need to go to the presentation.” But others are getting a lot more creative with their excuses for reserving that extra seat on the Barkley rocket. So, I’m proud to bring you:
Ten random excuses for trying to weasel an extra spot on the Zappos pitch team
- There needs to be at least one person in the room that can pull off wearing a rakish fedora the way I can.
- There might be a laptop emergency and someone needs to be there to run fsck on the hard drive.
- I’m going to use my downtime to find the childhood home of The Killers’ Brandon Flowers.
- I really think they’d enjoy the way I say “synergy” in my fake Scottish accent.
- I was heading that way anyway to audition for the Blue Man Group. Didn’t you get the email?
- My shoe and clothes shopping addictions automatically qualify me as a category expert.
- I want to go back to the Surf Buffet. What? It’s gone? When did they… What? Son of a…
- Can you say “lucky shirt?”
- I’m very flexible, which means that I can easily fit into someone’s carry-on.
- I’ll bake brownies.
We’ll see which excuses make the cut come Tuesday. Should be fun!
